having a blast playing Wii
It is getting to be very popular for seniors residences and care facilities to purchase several Wii consoles with huge screen TVs, for the seniors & elderly to have a great time with as well as getting a little exercise out of the deal.
Our elders are learning how to enjoy playing Nintendo Wii Golf, bowling, tennis & even Boxing are all very exciting to the often inactive senior set. Wii works magic when it comes to motivated the sedentary set to , well, MOVE!
Wii fit, Wii dance, Wii numbchucks, all the different Wii consoles will bring fun, challenge & excitement back to the weary & the bored. Anyone who is physically challenged can definitely benefit from playing Wii. Any amount of regular movement is an enormous benefit to a person who otherwise is fairly sedentary. I'm going to take our Wii over to my 87 year old parents place today and hook them up. They used to be very active, but in the last year, my Dad has become kind of wobbly in the legs and arms. He and My Mom are kind of nervous about going out and about now, since he often falls. I think the Wii may be the answer. Playing all their old favourite sports will bring some fun back into their world as well. I'll keep you posted on how it goes over in real time.
Since my parents learned how to play, they have had a few minor mishaps that served as flags for us to be careful. I will share my tips with all who care to read.
Balance issues, of course, are fairly obvious and each person will need to be assessed as to whether or not they need extra support while playing some of the Nintendo Wii games, especially the games that call for reaching or leaning; ie. Wii tennis, Wii bowling, Wii Fit, Wii boxing etc. Some seniors will do well sitting in a sturdy chair, while others might need to be be secured in a wheelchair or other support chair. The best way to start out is sitting until the game play is learned and then try it standing with someone strong to support the players. I thought it might be pretty cool to set up a shoulder harness and suspend them with their feet on the floor, but unable to fall. I think I might just try it myself. Sounds like a total riot! Anyway, the main idea here is that with seniors and anyone with disabilities, we have to take a few extra precautions before we set them up to go wild and crazy in the world of Wii. I guess it is just that easy to forget how old you are and just go nuts for fun.
Heart issues are a concern for seniors or anyone with heart disease or blood pressure or stroke related health problems. As with any new physical activity, these people will want to keep track of their heart rate. Some of the Wii sports games are so much fun because they involve a little competitive adrenaline to flow. This a factor to deal with perhaps by limited time to play with proper walking/cooling down periods as with any cardio style exercise.
Dizzyness issues are often a problem for seniors and naturally anyone that suffers from dizzy spells will need to play with support from either a strong person or some sort of safety harness or wheelchair.
Wii is Still The BEST Video Game for SENIORS
I congratulate the Nintendo Corporate Creators for coming up with this new concept in motion motivating gaming. I think It's going to change the world.

UPDATE JUNE 19, 2008
OK, we got my parents playing Wii. They loved the boxing and the bowling. The Wii fit board and Wiidance mat are above their physcical abilities, but the hand remotes are great. We did run into a snag, in that my Dad gets a little over zealous and loses his balance as he focuses in on trouncing my mother at every contest. (My Mom lets my Dad win: She says, When You are a woman...When you win; you lose) I have always disagreed with that but now as I see the old glint return to my Dads' eyes, I kind of get what she means.
